The Big Parade Malbec 2021

Lodi, California

Classic Movie Pairing

The Big Parade (1925)

King Vidor’s silent epic was one of the first major Hollywood films to depict modern warfare from a G.I.’s perspective. Audiences embraced its realism and made it one of the highest-grossing of all silent movies. Produced by the newly formed M-G-M studio, it tells the story of three friends (played by John Gilbert, Tom O’Brien and Karl Dane) who leave home and experience the horrors of war.

THE WINE

An iconic film like The Big Parade deserves an equally bold wine—and this Malbec rises to the challenge. It hails from Lodi, the most diverse wine region in the United States (read more below), and California’s great 2021 vintage. A total crowd pleaser, it offers juicy black cherry and plum flavors, framed by a toasty, oaky spice. As you can imagine, this Malbec makes a fitting tribute to the 1925 classic, which ranks as one of the highest grossing silent films of all time. THE GRAPE

Malbec’s home actually lies in southwest France (it was once more common in Bordeaux than Cabernet), where it traditionally makes the dark, tannic ‘black wines’ of Cahors. Today, “Malbec has become a fashionable grape to work with, thanks in large part to the popularity of Argentina’s plush and vivid versions” (Wine Spectator). It also thrives in sunny California, where it produces full-bodied, fruit-driven red wines.

THE REGION

Lodi is “one of the top wine regions in the country,” where winemakers “have quietly started producing some of the state’s best wines” (vinepair.com). While the region’s famed for old vine Zinfandel, it’s increasingly known for other top-notch reds. The warm climate is tempered by morning fog, helping prolong the grapes’ ‘hang time’ on the vine, for extra-concentrated flavors.

WITH FOOD

For a food pairing that will stir up some fanfare, serve this rich Malbec alongside steak. Sirloin, ribeye, T-bone…you can’t go wrong. It will be equally delicious with roasted or barbecued meats, depending on the season. Need a tasty vegetarian match? Try tomato-sauced pastas, root vegetable stews or hearty grilled veggies, like eggplant or mushroom.
