An Australian wine that can be described as “sunshine in a glass” calls for a sunny, smile-inducing movie. With a contagiously effervescent Sandra Dee as the teen surfer, this hit film helped to bring Southern Californian culture to the masses. Its popularity led to two sequels and a television series that launched the career of Sally Field.

THE WINE

The Full Fifteen represents everything that’s great about Australian wine—ripe, sunshine-in-a-glass flavors, made velvety smooth and deliciously rich by a full 15% alcohol. But Andrew ‘Big Mack’ McPherson is known for more than just his larger-than-life reds: he’s also a favorite of top critic James Halliday (Australia’s answer to Robert Parker), who rates his estate an impressive four stars. Here, Andrew aged his powerful Cabernet blend in fine American oak for extra-toasty complexity.

THE WINEMAKER

The McPherson family is an old and celebrated name in Aussie wine. Jock McPherson dabbled as a radio announcer, pilot, publicist and sawmill owner before settling on wine as his true calling. McPherson Wines opened in 1968, and by 1971, Jock’s son (Andrew, pictured here in his barrel cellar) was overseeing 1,000+ hectares of vines in the premium Hunter Valley. Today, with 40 years of experience under his belt, Andrew is one of Australia’s most celebrated, influential winemakers.

THE TWIST

Many quality-focused winemakers insist on night harvesting grapes (picking in the dark means cooler temperatures, which locks in complex aromas). So, it’s logical they’d do everything they could to make sure their evening efforts didn’t go to waste. Enter, the screwcap. This convenient closure seals in a wine’s full aromatic character (and is the topper of choice for $100+ a bottle Penfolds Grange).

WITH FOOD

With its BIG mouthfilling texture, this flavor-packed red is a perfect match for a robust cut of beef. The bigger, the better, says Andrew, who recommends a rib-eye steak, smothered in sautéed onions and sauce. The Full Fifteen is equally delicious with other barbecue classics like burgers (beef or portobello mushroom), ribs or sausages.
