The Jumper Sauvignon Blanc 2021

Marlborough, New Zealand

Classic Movie Pairing

Sweet Charity (1969)

The Jumper, a vibrant and fiercely independent wine, pairs nicely with this freewheeling Bob Fosse musical written by Neil Simon. Shirley MacLaine stars as Charity Hope Valentine, who finds herself repeatedly tested in her search for love. This energetic tale was based on Federico Fellini’s Nights of Cabiria (1957).

THE WINE

This Sauvignon Blanc favorite is a special project from James Macdonald (below, right), nephew to ‘The First Lady of New Zealand Wine,’ Jane Hunter. James honed his craft at top estates from Bordeaux to Australia, and The Jumper shows off his talent. A previous vintage earned big praise from critic Sam Kim: “pristine fruit intensity…immediately appealing with plenty of vibrant, tasty flavors.” Made with premium grapes from the Wairau Valley (home to famed Cloudy Bay), the new 2021 is just as tasty.

THE LEGACY

Hunter’s Wines is one of the most renowned (and fiercely independent) family estates in all of New Zealand. This tight- knit winemaking clan has devoted the last 30 years to transforming Marlborough (once a lowly sheep station) into one of the world’s most iconic wine regions. “If there is one company that started the whole international story called ‘Marlborough Sauvignon Blanc,’ it is Hunter’s—they got the magic started,” says Bob Campbell, one of the country’s top critics and a Master of Wine.

THE REGION

France’s Loire Valley is Sauvignon Blanc’s spiritual home, but in the last 30 years Marlborough has really catapulted the grape into the global spotlight. Along the banks of the Wairau River on the northern tip of New Zealand’s South Island, the region’s warm days, cool nights and rocky, heat- trapping soils produce that trademark balance of ripe, tropical-fruit flavor and crisp, mouthwatering acidity.

WITH FOOD

Both James and Jane love serving The Jumper as an aperitif. However, since the name of the wine is a nod to James’ globetrotting antics, why not enjoy the fruits of his labor with cuisine from around the world? Steamed lobster (New England), warm goat cheese salad (France) or a plate of fresh mussels (New Zealand) are all delicious options.
