The Mission Grüner Veltliner 2021

Santa Barbara County, California

Classic Movie Pairing

Mrs. Miniver (1942)

A film about the courage of British families during World War II, it served as inspiration for Americans who found themselves pulled into the conflict. Directed by William Wyler, it starred Greer Garson, Walter Pidgeon and Teresa Wright in what would be career-defining roles. The movie garnered 12 Academy Award nominations, including wins for Best Picture, Director, Actress and Supporting Actress. Pair this proud film with this brilliant and fresh Grüner Veltliner. Both are sure to inspire.

THE WINE

Long before it became a haven for grape growing, California’s Santa Barbara County was home to several Spanish missions. Inspired by this heritage, The Mission is an expressive, elegant Grüner Veltliner, presented in a traditional slender bottle. Crafted with grapes grown along the coastline, it’s a brilliant showcase of the great 2021 vintage. Fresh and complex, the wine offers citrus peel notes, soft stone-fruit flavors and a flinty minerality. Delicious on its own and even better with food.

THE GRAPE

Grüner Veltliner (or “Groo-Vee,” as it’s called by fans) has grown to prominence as Austria’s star white grape and has found a happy home in California. It’s also a favorite recommendation for top sommeliers. Why? Thanks to its tongue- tingling acidity and subtle fruit flavors, you may never meet a more food-friendly white. The wines can be made in many styles—from light and easy-drinking to complex and mineral-rich. As you’ll taste, The Mission lies deliciously between the two styles.

THE REGION

Santa Barbara County’s earliest vines were planted in the 1960s. But after the success of Firestone in the ’70s, the total number of acres under vine boomed. Today, about 24,000 acres are dedicated vineyard space. The area’s moderate temperatures result in longer grape “hang time.” This extended period ripening on the vine creates serious depth and complexity of flavor.

WITH FOOD

Whether you serve this lovely white as an aperitif or with food, be careful not to over-chill your bottle, as that will dull the delicate flavors. It’s a great match for hard-to-pair vegetarian dishes—try it alongside a chopped asparagus salad. You could also enjoy it with schnitzel (a favorite in Austria) or seafood dishes, such as grilled snapper.
