The Sea Hawk Pinot Blanc 2020

Monterey County, California

Classic Movie Pairing

The Sea Hawk (1924)

Silent cinema at its epic best, this high-sea adventure tells the tale of Sir Oliver Tressilian (Milton Sills), a British nobleman, who after being captured and turned into a galley slave on a Spanish galleon, finds a new life as a pirate captain. The film, a true spectacle even for viewers of today, features full-size ships that served as floating sets and over 1,000 extras. Director Frank Lloyd’s high level of craftsmanship was rewarded by an enthusiastic audience who made it the top grossing movie of the year.

THE WINE

Produced and directed by Frank Lloyd, 1924’s The Sea Hawk remains, almost a century later, a reference point for seafaring movies. Itself a European transplant—and something of an unsung hero—Pinot Blanc is well cast in offering homage to this enduring classic. If you’ve yet to taste one, this dazzling white makes a brilliant introduction. Hailing from California’s premium Monterey County and the great 2020 vintage, it has a lovely floral lift, with crisp orchard-fruit flavors and hints of citrus. Perfect for your next seafaring adventure—take it to the beach, your pool or simply sip on the patio.

THE GRAPE

Pinot Blanc is a rare, white mutation within the Pinot family that produces wines with vibrant acidity and ripe citrus- fruit flavors. Highly prized in the Burgundy and Alsace regions, it can yield wines that sell for upwards of $100 a bottle. Outside of France, Pinot Blanc vines are scarce, but in the United States, you’ll find them in California and the North Fork of Long Island in New York.

THE REGION

Monterey’s a bit different than other nearby regions. Rainfall is low, but the underground Salinas River provides water to the vines. The sunnier areas also enjoy some of California’s longest growing seasons. Grapes here have a longer ‘hang time’ on the vines, which helps develop more complex aromas and flavors. Cooling breezes from Monterey Bay seal in freshness and prevent over-ripening.

WITH FOOD

As the name suggests, The Sea Hawk will shine with all your favorite seafood dishes. Serve it alongside crab cakes, baked sole, steamed lobster and more. If you’re not a seafood fan, try this fine Pinot Blanc with roasted white meats or salads. Two top ideas: a Chinese chicken salad with sesame dressing or an arugula salad with pears, goat cheese and raspberry vinaigrette.
