Vilarissa Valley 2019
Classic Movie Pairing
The Remains of the Day (1993)This complex red, full of old world charm, pairs perfectly with a film steeped in European tradition. The story tells of a British butler who sacrifices his own happiness to fully commit to the service of his master and estate. This MerchantIvory drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Emma Thompson became an instant classic upon release. Rich with melancholic notes and historical tensions, it’s a compelling match for this robust wine.
The Wine
Every famous wine region has a historic family (or two) that helped put it on the fine wine map. For Portugal’s premium Douro Valley, it’s the legendary Van Zeller clan. Crafted in celebration of the Van Zellers’ 400th anniversary, Vilarissa Valley hails from their vineyards in the Alto Douro Vinhateiro. This inland district is warmer and drier than the rest of the Douro, which helps the grapes develop richer, more complex flavors. No wonder this luscious Touriga Nacional blend won 90 points and gold medal from the prestigious Gilbert & Gaillard wine guide.
The Family
Portugal’s storied Van Zeller family have made wine since 1715, with 15 consecutive generations of producers passing on their knowledge and traditions. Here, you’ll enjoy the talents of current winemaker, Alvaro van Zeller, former Head of the Port Wine Institute (where he was tasked with approving the category for all Port wines released to the market). Of course, Alvaro’s skills extend far beyond Port – as you’ll taste with this rich dry red.
The Region
“The Douro Valley has so much going in its favor, it’s almost ridiculous,” says New York Times critic Eric Asimov. He’s right. It’s got good looks (left), brains (skilled winemakers like Alvaro), history (thanks to its famous Port trade), and distinctive grapes. The dry reds are so good, they “deserve a place at the table of wine lovers who love full-bodied, rich, and ripe-tasting red wines” (Wine Spectator).
With Food
Fans of full-flavored, fruit-rich reds will enjoy sipping Vilarissa Valley all on its own. But it will really shine with a hearty meal. We suggest pork dishes (such as herb-crusted chops or bacon-wrapped tenderloin) or even dark-meat chicken or turkey. You could also pair it with meaty stews or, for vegetarians, a spicy tomato soup with garbanzo beans.
