Wine Flavor Profile

Vinha do Fava Reserva is a medium- to full-bodied red with intense black cherry, plum and sweet spice aromas. Look for similar flavors on the luscious, concentrated palate, leading to a long, spicy finish.

Lush and intensely textured, this Castelão-based blend beautifully complements the film’s epic grandeur. Directed by David Lean and based on Boris Pasternak’s novel, it portrays the tumultuous romance of Yuri Zhivago (Omar Sharif) and Lara Antipova (Julie Christie) amidst the upheaval of the Russian Revolution and its aftermath. Hailed as a classic upon its release, the film’s commercial success helped save MGM from financial ruin. Like the winery behind this wine, the film’s achievements were widely recognized, earning ten Academy Award nominations and winning five.

Founded in 1920, Casa Ermelinda Freitas is one of Portugal’s most renowned family-run wineries. Led by fourth-generation proprietor Leonor Freitas (who has been honored by the government for her service to the wine industry), the estate has won literally hundreds of major awards and 90+ point scores for its wines. And they make some of our customers’ absolute favorites, too.

Working closely with head winemaker Jaime Quendera, Leonor crafted Vinha do Fava to celebrate the estate’s 100+ year legacy. As you’d expect, they put great care and attention into every stage of the winemaking process. They selected the grape varieties on which the estate was founded—Castelão from their oldest vineyards, Touriga Nacional grown in their prized Fava vineyard and Alicante Bouschet, which is loved for its deep, dark charm.

As the finishing touch, Jaime treated the wine to eight months in fine French and American oak barrels. His and Leonor’s efforts were well rewarded. Last vintage, the Reserva won a ‘Best Wine From Portugal’ trophy and gold medal at the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Competition. And the 2021 release is every bit as impressive (and sure to earn its own awards soon!).

Look forward to intense black cherry and plum flavors, plus sweet spice notes from the barrel aging. Rich and textured, with a round, juicy structure, this luscious Reserva is ready to impress on your dinner table—especially if you’re serving roasted pork or hearty stews.
