William Knuttel Sauvignon Blanc 2020

Sonoma County, California

Classic Movie Pairing

You Can’t Take It with You (1938)

While there is no fencing in Frank Capra’s Oscar-winning comedy (as on this delicious wine’s label), there is no shortage of exuberance in the film’s Vanderhof family. Pour a glass of this zippy Sauvignon Blanc and sit back for both a rollicking and poignant story of free spirits, stuffed shirts, and a love that bridges the gap between them. Several notable stars populate the film, including central couple James Stewart and Jean Arthur, along with opposing patriarchs Lionel Barrymore and Edward Arnold.

The Wine

After decades of building his reputation at top boutiques like Saintsbury and Chalk Hill, Bill Knuttel (below) struck out on his own – with glorious results. He makes some of our most popular California wines, so we’re thrilled to introduce his ‘Saber Selection’ Sauvignon Blanc. From premium Sonoma County and the great 2020 vintage, it shows all the elegance and finesse of an expert fencer. With ripe, tropical-fruit flavors and fresh herb notes, this Sauvignon Blanc will shine with seafood, salads, and more.

The Grape

Taking off in popularity in the last 30 years, Sauvignon Blanc has traveled a long way from its spiritual home in France’s Loire Valley. Most notably, it’s taken on new life in Marlborough, New Zealand (where it’s famous for intensely concentrated, grassy/citrus flavors) and in California (where it develops vibrant, tropical-fruit notes). It’s often favored as a crisper, more refreshing alternative to rich, oaky Chardonnays, and can offer more zippy, exhilarating character than Pinot Grigio.

The Region

Sonoma is a diverse and rambling county over twice the size of Napa, with a wide array of landscapes and wines that Wine Spectator says are “unparalleled in the Golden State.” Its warm, sunny days (moderated by rolling fog from the Pacific Ocean and the Russian River) and cool nights yield remarkably pure fruit. The rugged terrain and just the right amount of water help the grapes ripen perfectly.

With Food

While this elegant Sauvignon Blanc makes a refreshing aperitif, it will really shine alongside a meal. We love it with seafood: baked white fish, fresh crab, or shrimp tostadas would all be delicious pairings. You could also enjoy this with crisp summer salads. Try topping your salad with crumbled goat cheese (Sauvignon Blanc’s classic match) and a citrus vinaigrette dressing.
