Wings Cabernet Franc 2020

Contra Costa County, California

Classic Movie Pairing

Wings (1927)

This silent classic is an aviation feat about two pilots vying for the attention of the same woman as they fight for their country in World War I. A groundbreaking epic, it notably went on to win the first Academy Award for Best Picture. Directed by William Wellman, himself a former WWI fighter pilot, it inspired many future war films and helped establish the careers of its stars, including Clara Bow and Gary Cooper. The wine, with its intense flavors, makes an excellent companion to the film’s intense and dramatic scenes.

THE WINE

Released in 1927, Wings made history as the first film to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Set during World War I, this silent epic follows two American fighter pilots, who go from small-town rivals (vying over the affections of the same woman) to brothers in arms. Equally complex and thrilling, this smooth, full- bodied Cabernet Franc brims with ripe dark berry, violet and spice flavors. It’s a wonderful testament to how well this native French grape thrives in sunny California’s Contra Costa County. Enjoy it with its namesake film and an equally flavorful meal.

THE GRAPE

Cabernet Franc, the softer, lighter-bodied parent of beefy Cabernet Sauvignon, makes its most famous wines in France —for now. It plays a supporting role in many red Bordeaux blends and stars in its own juicy red wines in the Loire Valley. But you’ll increasingly find top examples in California (as you’ll soon taste!), Argentina, Italy and beyond. And wherever it goes, the grape brings its signature herbal, spicy edge.

THE VINTAGE

Oh, 2020. It was a difficult year for many—especially wine growers in California, who had to contend with the specter of COVID-19 then devastating drought and wild fires. But despite these challenges, quality remains high. The lack of rainfall meant lower yields of better-concentrated fruit and early picking, so the wines that were made, like this Cabernet Franc, are drinking deliciously.

WITH FOOD

Cabernet Franc is one of those red wines that really shines alongside a hearty meal. It makes a tasty partner to juicy steaks, beef tenderloin and other savory red meats. Rich poultry dishes, such as duck, or pork would be delicious, too. For a delightful vegetarian match, try grilled veggie kebabs, eggplant or mushroom steaks, or winter stews starring quinoa or lentils.
